Why is a circle 360°?

Good morning everyone. Yesterday we had a short talk asking us why is a circle 360° and not some other nice even measurement like 500° for example. I spent 10 minutes googling about why and it all links back to the Babylonians.

It is said that the Babylonians had a base number system of 60 which was easily divisible 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The method of why the system of a circle is 360° is but it still links back to the Babylonians. It's a theory that a year was about 360° days and that the stars would move around the sky in a large circle every year. A quick history tidbit. In the past they used the stars and sky as a calendar. Since humans at the time noticed the constellations moved in a full circle each year, they concluded that since a year is (usually) 360° days, a circle is 360.

It was also said that 360° is a good mathematical numerical calculation because it can be easily divisible. This was also the creation of the 60 second-hour and 60 minute-hour.

So in the end the origin of the circle was influenced by nature and nothing precisely mathematical.
